# Xbox Controller Tester — Buttons, Triggers, Sticks and Rumble

> Test an Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or Elite controller online: buttons, bumpers, analog triggers, stick drift and rumble motors. Free and private.

Canonical page: https://controllertests.com/controller-test/xbox/

Connect your Xbox controller by USB, Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter and test every input live, including analog triggers, drift and both rumble motors.

**Interactive tool:** this page hosts a free test that runs locally in the visitor's web browser (no install, no upload). To use it, open https://controllertests.com/controller-test/xbox/ in a browser on the device that has the hardware attached.

## Connecting an Xbox controller

- **USB:** a USB-C data cable (micro-USB on older Xbox One controllers). Works on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.
- **Bluetooth:** Xbox One S and newer controllers support Bluetooth. Hold the small pairing button on top until the Xbox logo flashes quickly, then pick the controller in your Bluetooth settings.
- **Xbox Wireless Adapter** on Windows also works — the browser sees the controller like a wired one.

Press any button and the diagram switches to your controller, showing A, B, X, Y, LB/RB, LT/RT, View, Menu, the Xbox button and both stick clicks.

## What the readings mean on an Xbox controller

**Triggers:** LT and RT are analog. Pull slowly — the value should rise smoothly to 1.00 and return to 0.00. With some older drivers or browsers the triggers appear as axes instead of buttons; the raw axes list shows them either way.

**Sticks:** let go and read the “at rest” value:

| Stick reading at rest | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| under 5% | Healthy. Every analog stick has a little noise; you will never notice this in a game. |
| 5–10% | Small offset from normal wear. Usually hidden by the dead zone games apply. |
| 10–20% | Mild drift. Games with small or custom dead zones may register slow movement on their own. |
| over 20% | Strong drift. Likely to move a character or camera in most games — a hardware fault. |

**Rumble:** Xbox controllers have a strong (low-frequency) and a weak (high-frequency) motor, and on Windows also small motors in each trigger. Test each with the vibration buttons; “Trigger rumble” appears when your browser supports it (Chrome and Edge on Windows).

## How to test an Xbox controller step by step

1. Connect the controller and press any button.
2. Press A, B, X, Y, both bumpers, View, Menu, the Xbox button, the D-pad in all four directions and both stick clicks.
3. Pull LT and RT slowly and release them.
4. Let go of the sticks and check the drift value, then run the circularity test on each stick.
5. Run dual rumble, the strong and weak motors, and trigger rumble if available.

## Elite Series 2 and Share button

The Elite's back paddles are mapped to other buttons through its profiles, so pressing a paddle lights up whichever button it is assigned to. The Share button on Series X|S controllers is outside the standard layout and is shown only by some browsers.

## Fixing common Xbox controller problems

- **Update the firmware** with the Xbox Accessories app on Windows or an Xbox console — it fixes many Bluetooth and input bugs.
- **Disconnects or lag over Bluetooth:** fresh batteries, fewer obstacles between the controller and the computer, or a cable/adapter for comparison.
- **Drift or a sticky bumper:** compressed air around the stick base or bumper, then retest; persistent drift usually needs a stick replacement or warranty repair.

- **Not detected?** Press a face button — browsers hide controllers until you do. Then try another USB port or cable (many cables are charge-only), or re-pair over Bluetooth.
- **Close remapping tools.** Steam (with Steam Input), DS4Windows, reWASD or x360ce can hide or rename the controller. Quit them, then reload the page.
- **Wrong buttons lighting up?** The controller may be using a non-standard mapping; the raw button list shows exactly what the browser receives.
- **A button never lights up?** Test it in a second browser. If it fails everywhere, the switch or ribbon cable is faulty — update the firmware, then consider repair or a warranty claim.

## Method, limits and browser support

The page reads the controller through the Gamepad API every display frame. What it cannot see:

- Motion sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer), touchpad finger position, battery level and light-bar color.
- DualSense adaptive-trigger resistance and fine haptics — only standard rumble is available to web pages.
- Extra buttons outside the standard layout (for example the Xbox Share button, the DualSense mute button or Elite paddles) appear only in some browsers, if at all.

| Browser | Buttons & sticks | Vibration | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Chrome / Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) | Yes | Yes (dual rumble; trigger rumble for Xbox on Windows) | Most complete support, recommended. |
| Chrome (Android) | Yes, over Bluetooth or USB-OTG | Usually | Pair the controller in Android settings first. |
| Firefox | Yes | Not in most versions | Some controllers report triggers as axes — check the raw axes list. |
| Safari (macOS, iPhone, iPad) | Yes for Xbox, PlayStation and MFi controllers | Varies | Pair in Bluetooth settings first. |

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I test my Xbox controller on PC?

Connect it by USB, Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, open this page and press a button. Every button, both triggers and both sticks appear live — no app needed.

### Can I test the trigger rumble motors?

In Chrome and Edge on Windows, yes — the “Trigger rumble” button appears when the browser supports it. Other browsers can usually only run the two main motors, or none.

### Why do my triggers show as axes?

Some browser and driver combinations report LT and RT as axes rather than buttons. The values are still correct — look at the raw axes list.

### How do I fix Xbox controller stick drift?

Update the firmware, clean around the stick with compressed air and roll it in full circles, then retest with the [drift test](https://controllertests.com/controller-test/stick-drift/). If drift stays above about 10%, the stick sensor is worn and needs repair or replacement.
