Pick a duration, click the pad as fast as you can, and get your clicks per second the moment the timer runs out.

**Interactive tool:** this page hosts a free test that runs locally in the visitor's web browser (no install, no upload). To use it, open https://controllertests.com/cps-test/ in a browser on the device that has the hardware attached.

## What your CPS score means

CPS is simply the number of clicks divided by the length of the test. A 5-second round with 40 clicks is 8.0 CPS. Short rounds (1–5 s) measure burst speed; longer rounds (30–60 s) measure endurance, and almost everyone's CPS drops as the round gets longer.

As a rough guide, people clicking normally with one finger commonly land somewhere around 5–8 CPS. Practiced techniques like jitter or butterfly clicking can push well past 10, and the very highest scores you see online usually come from butterfly or drag clicking. The rank labels below are just for fun:

| CPS | Label |
| --- | --- |
| below 4 | Turtle |
| 4 – 6 | Casual clicker |
| 6 – 8 | Quick finger |
| 8 – 10 | Fast |
| 10 – 12 | Jitter speed |
| 12 – 15 | Lightning |
| 15 and up | Butterfly territory |

## How to take the CPS test

1. Choose a duration at the top of the panel — 5 or 10 seconds is the most common.
2. Click the pad as fast as you can. The timer starts on your very first click.
3. Keep clicking until the ring runs out. Clicks after the timer ends don't count.
4. Read your CPS and rank, then press **Try again** or share the result. Your best score for each mode is saved in this browser.

## Clicking techniques

- **Regular clicking** — one finger, normal clicks. The most comfortable and the baseline everyone starts with.
- **Jitter clicking** — tensing the forearm and wrist so the finger vibrates on the button. Fast, but tiring, and it's easy to strain your arm.
- **Butterfly clicking** — two fingers alternating on the same button, doubling the number of presses.
- **Drag clicking** — sliding a finger across the button so friction makes it bounce rapidly. It depends on the mouse's switch and surface, can wear switches quickly, and some game servers don't allow it.

Whatever the technique, take breaks and stop if your hand or wrist hurts.

## Method and limits

The test counts `pointerdown` events on the pad — left-clicks from a mouse, taps from a touchscreen or pen, plus `Enter`/`Space` on the keyboard — and times the round with the browser's high-resolution clock. The final score always uses the full duration of the mode, so stopping early lowers it. Extra fingers on a touchscreen are only counted one at a time. A mouse with a worn, bouncing switch can register one press as two and inflate the score — check it with the [double-click test](https://controllertests.com/mouse-test/double-click/). Autoclickers and macros produce numbers no human can reach.

| Input | Supported | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mouse (left button) | All modern browsers | Right and middle clicks are ignored |
| Touchscreen / pen | Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge | Taps count; double-tap zoom is disabled on the pad |
| Keyboard | All browsers | Focus the pad, then `Enter` or `Space`; held keys don't auto-repeat |

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good CPS?

Around 6–8 CPS is a solid score with regular clicking. Double digits usually take jitter or butterfly clicking. The best way to judge progress is your own personal best in the same mode.

### How is CPS calculated?

Total clicks divided by the length of the round in seconds. 50 clicks in a 5-second round is 10 CPS. The full duration is always used, even if you stop clicking early.

### Does my mouse affect my CPS?

Somewhat. A light, short-travel switch helps, and some mice suit butterfly or drag clicking better. A worn switch that double-clicks can falsely inflate the count.

### Which mode should I use?

5 or 10 seconds is the most common for comparing scores. 1 second shows pure burst speed; 30 and 60 seconds test stamina.

### Can I do the CPS test on a phone?

Yes — tap the pad. Taps from one finger at a time are counted; the pad disables double-tap zooming so fast taps register cleanly.
