# Spacebar Counter: How Fast Can You Press Space?

> Free spacebar counter and speed test. Count every Space press, ignore auto-repeat, and see presses per second in 5, 10, 30 or 60-second rounds or untimed.

Canonical page: https://controllertests.com/cps-test/spacebar-counter/

Hit the Space key as fast as you can — every real press is counted, auto-repeat is ignored, and you get presses per second when the timer ends.

**Interactive tool:** this page hosts a free test that runs locally in the visitor's web browser (no install, no upload). To use it, open https://controllertests.com/cps-test/spacebar-counter/ in a browser on the device that has the hardware attached.

## What the spacebar counter measures

The counter adds one for every separate press of the Space key and divides by the round length to give presses per second. It works two ways: as a **speed test** (5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, starting on your first press) and as a plain **spacebar counter** with no time limit — handy for checking that a key registers every single press.

Spacebar speed is usually a little lower than mouse clicking speed because a keyboard key travels further than a mouse switch, but rapid tapping with one or two fingers can still get high. Compare yourself with your own best for the same mode rather than with numbers from elsewhere, since keyboards differ a lot.

## How to use it

1. Pick a mode — a timed round or **No limit** for a simple counter.
2. Press `Space`. In timed modes the clock starts on that first press.
3. Keep tapping. Holding the key down does nothing: only fresh presses count.
4. When the time is up, read presses per second, then try again or share your score. Bests are saved per mode in this browser.

## Using it as a key test

Because every press is counted exactly once, the counter is a quick way to check a suspect spacebar. Press slowly and deliberately ten times: the count should read exactly 10. If it jumps by two on some presses, the switch is *chattering* — see the [keyboard chattering test](https://controllertests.com/keyboard-test/chattering/). If some presses don't count, especially when you press near the ends of the bar, the stabilizer may be binding or the switch may be failing. The [keyboard tester](https://controllertests.com/keyboard-test/) checks every other key.

## Method and limits

The page listens for `keydown` events with `code === "Space"` and skips events marked as auto-repeat (`event.repeat`), which the operating system generates while a key is held. Timing uses the browser's high-resolution clock, and the final rate always uses the full round length. Space is blocked from scrolling the page while the test is open, except when you are typing in a text field. Some laptops and compact keyboards drop presses when several keys are held at once; that is a keyboard limitation, not the counter.

| Input | Works in | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Physical keyboard | All modern browsers | Auto-repeat ignored; page scrolling blocked |
| Touchscreen | Mobile Chrome, Safari, Firefox | Tap the on-screen key; on-screen keyboards are not used |
| Bluetooth keyboard on phone/tablet | iPadOS, Android | Works like a desktop keyboard |

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I count spacebar presses?

Choose **No limit** and press Space — the big number counts every press. Press **Reset counter** to start again from zero.

### Does holding the spacebar count?

No. When you hold a key, your computer sends repeated “auto-repeat” events; the counter ignores them so only real presses count.

### What is a good spacebar speed?

It depends on your keyboard and technique, so the most useful comparison is your own best for the same mode. Shorter rounds give higher numbers than 30 or 60-second rounds.

### Why does my count jump by two?

If one deliberate press adds two, the key is probably chattering — the switch registers a single press twice. Confirm it with the [keyboard chattering test](https://controllertests.com/keyboard-test/chattering/).

### Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Tap the big on-screen spacebar. Each tap counts as one press.
