# Mouse Test: Check Every Button and the Scroll Wheel

> Free online mouse tester: check left, right, middle, back and forward buttons, scroll wheel direction and double-click faults instantly in your browser.

Canonical page: https://controllertests.com/mouse-test/

Click, scroll and move inside the test area — each mouse button lights up on the diagram and every press, scroll step and double-registration is counted.

**Interactive tool:** this page hosts a free test that runs locally in the visitor's web browser (no install, no upload). To use it, open https://controllertests.com/mouse-test/ in a browser on the device that has the hardware attached.

## What the results mean

Every physical press should add exactly **one** to that button's counter and light up the matching part of the diagram for as long as you hold it. Rolling the wheel one notch should add one to *Up* or *Down* — never to the opposite direction.

- **A button never lights up** — the switch, cable, receiver or driver isn't passing the press to the computer, or the mouse's own software has reassigned that button to something else.
- **A press shows in “Doubles”** — one press arrived as two clicks less than 80 ms apart. Occasional doubles while clicking fast can be you; repeated doubles while clicking slowly point to a worn switch. Confirm with the [double-click test](https://controllertests.com/mouse-test/double-click/).
- **The wheel counts the wrong way or skips** — dust or wear in the wheel encoder. Scrolling down that sometimes registers as up is a classic symptom.
- **The highlight flickers off while you hold a button** — the switch is losing contact, which also breaks drag-and-drop and holding-to-aim in games.

## How to test your mouse

1. Move the pointer into the test area. The crosshair and coordinates confirm the sensor is tracking.
2. Click the left, right and middle (wheel) buttons one at a time, holding each for a second.
3. Press the side buttons. Back and Forward won't navigate away from this page while the pointer is inside the area.
4. Roll the wheel slowly up, then down, one notch at a time, and tilt it left and right if your mouse supports horizontal scrolling.
5. Check the verdict below the test area. Use **Reset** to start over, for example after changing a setting.

## Method and limits

The tester listens to the browser's standard mouse events. Each `mousedown` and `mouseup` reports which button changed (`MouseEvent.button`: 0 left, 1 middle, 2 right, 3 back, 4 forward) together with a high-resolution timestamp. Scrolling arrives as `wheel` events with a vertical and horizontal delta and a *delta mode* that says whether the step is measured in pixels, lines or pages. Two presses of the same button closer than 80 ms are flagged as a possible double-click fault, because that is faster than almost anyone can click deliberately.

A browser only sees what the operating system passes on. Buttons handled inside the mouse — DPI switches, profile buttons, “sniper” buttons — never reach the page. If vendor software (Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG and similar) remaps a side button to a keystroke or a system action, the browser receives that action instead of a mouse button, so the button looks dead here even though the hardware is fine.

## If a button or the wheel misbehaves

- **Rule out the connection:** try another USB port (directly on the computer, not a hub), a fresh battery or a full charge, and move a wireless receiver closer with an extension cable.
- **Rule out software:** open the mouse's companion app and reset the button assignments to default, or test on another computer.
- **Clean it:** short bursts of compressed air around the wheel and under the main buttons often cure a skipping wheel or a sticky click.
- **Hardware fault confirmed?** Double-clicking switches and failing encoders are common warranty claims. Note the date and keep a screenshot of the result for support.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I test my mouse buttons online?

Move the pointer into the test area above and press each button. The matching part of the diagram lights up while it is held and its counter goes up by one per press. Roll the wheel up and down to check scrolling.

### Why doesn't my mouse's Back or Forward button register?

Most often the mouse's companion software has reassigned the button (for example to a keyboard shortcut), so the browser never sees a mouse button. Reset the button to its default function in that app and test again. On a Mac, some mice need their vendor software for side buttons to work at all.

### The tester shows a “double” — is my mouse broken?

Not necessarily. A double means two presses of the same button arrived less than 80 ms apart. If you were clicking slowly and still see doubles, the switch is probably worn. Run the [double-click test](https://controllertests.com/mouse-test/double-click/) with 50+ slow single clicks for a reliable answer.

### Can this test the DPI button?

No. DPI and profile buttons are handled by the mouse itself and change how it reports movement; they are not sent to the computer as button presses. You can check that a DPI change works by watching how fast the crosshair moves.

### Does the mouse test work on a phone or tablet?

Taps are counted as left clicks, which confirms the screen responds. To test a real mouse, connect it to the tablet or phone (iPad and Android support Bluetooth and USB mice) or use a computer.
