Connecting a DualSense to your computer or phone
- USB: use a USB-C cable that carries data — many cables only charge. The light bar stays lit while connected.
- Bluetooth: with the controller off, hold the PS and Create buttons together until the light bar flashes quickly, then choose “DualSense Wireless Controller” in your Bluetooth settings.
- Then press any button on this page. The diagram switches to the PlayStation layout automatically (Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle, L1/R1, L2/R2, Create, Options, PS and touchpad).
The same steps work for the DualSense Edge and the PS4 DualShock 4 (on the DualShock 4 the pairing combo is PS + Share).
What each reading tells you about a DualSense
Sticks: let go and check the “at rest” value. Stick drift is one of the most widely reported DualSense faults, so it is worth running the dedicated drift test as well:
| Stick reading at rest | What it means |
|---|---|
| under 5% | Healthy. Every analog stick has a little noise; you will never notice this in a game. |
| 5–10% | Small offset from normal wear. Usually hidden by the dead zone games apply. |
| 10–20% | Mild drift. Games with small or custom dead zones may register slow movement on their own. |
| over 20% | Strong drift. Likely to move a character or camera in most games — a hardware fault. |
L2 and R2 are analog: squeeze slowly and the trigger bar should climb smoothly from 0.00 to 1.00. A trigger that jumps straight to 1.00, or never quite returns to 0.00, points to a worn sensor or a stuck trigger spring.
Touchpad click appears as button 17 in most browsers. The touchpad's finger position is not available to web pages.
How to test a PS5 controller step by step
- Connect the DualSense by USB-C or Bluetooth and press any button.
- Press every button, including the touchpad, PS, Create and Options, and both stick clicks (L3/R3), until “Buttons tested” is complete.
- Squeeze L2 and R2 slowly and release them fully.
- Let go of both sticks and read the drift value, then run “Test circularity” on each stick.
- Press “Dual rumble” to check both vibration motors (Chrome or Edge).
What a browser cannot test on a DualSense
The browser sees the DualSense through the standard Gamepad API, so these features stay out of reach of any website:
- Motion sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer), touchpad finger position, battery level and light-bar color.
- DualSense adaptive-trigger resistance and fine haptics — only standard rumble is available to web pages.
- Extra buttons outside the standard layout (for example the Xbox Share button, the DualSense mute button or Elite paddles) appear only in some browsers, if at all.
To check adaptive triggers and haptics, use a PS5 game such as the pre-installed Astro's Playroom.
Fixing common DualSense problems
- Update the firmware on a PS5, or on Windows with Sony's official firmware updater for the DualSense.
- Reset the controller: press the small reset button in the hole on the back for a few seconds, then reconnect.
- Drift: blow compressed air around the base of the stick and roll it in full circles, then retest. On the DualSense Edge you can swap the stick module yourself.
- Still failing? Copy the test report and contact PlayStation support or the retailer about repair or warranty in your region.
Browser support
| Browser | Buttons & sticks | Vibration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS) | Yes | Yes (dual rumble; trigger rumble for Xbox on Windows) | Most complete support, recommended. |
| Chrome (Android) | Yes, over Bluetooth or USB-OTG | Usually | Pair the controller in Android settings first. |
| Firefox | Yes | Not in most versions | Some controllers report triggers as axes — check the raw axes list. |
| Safari (macOS, iPhone, iPad) | Yes for Xbox, PlayStation and MFi controllers | Varies | Pair in Bluetooth settings first. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I test a PS5 controller on a PC?
Yes. Connect it by USB-C or Bluetooth, open this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and press a button. No drivers or PlayStation software are needed.
How do I check my DualSense for stick drift?
Let go of both sticks and watch the “at rest” value, or run the stick drift test, which measures for three seconds and grades each stick. Readings above about 10% mean the stick is drifting enough for some games to notice.
Can a website test the adaptive triggers?
No. Web pages can read how far L2 and R2 are pressed and can trigger standard rumble, but adaptive-trigger resistance and the DualSense haptic motors are not exposed to browsers.
Why does the touchpad show up as button 17?
The standard gamepad layout has 17 buttons (0–16). Browsers add the DualSense touchpad click as an extra button with index 17.
Does this work with a PS4 DualShock 4?
Yes. The DualShock 4 uses the same PlayStation layout; pair it over Bluetooth with PS + Share, or connect it with a micro-USB data cable.
